Public and landscape sculpture
Clynt White
Quiet ground
Public and landscape-integrated sculpture, in concrete, steel and light, made to be walked around rather than looked up at.
01 Works in place
Works in place
Public and landscape-integrated sculpture, sited in reserves, on riverbanks and in civic ground. Each piece is made for its place, and made to stay: concrete cast to hold a patina, stone that wears smooth where hands find it, steel left to settle to a quiet tone.
02 A record of site
A record of site
Around the stone, the ground is drawn on. A ring cut into the disc, a line threaded through the concrete, a mark that reads differently as the light moves across the day. The work is documented plainly, as a record of the site it now belongs to.
The practice
Made to be walked around
A public work is seen from every side, in every season, by people who never chose to look at it. So the work starts with the ground rather than the object: how people arrive and leave, where they slow down, what the light does. A piece drawn from its site tends to settle in and feel like it belongs.
